News Letter

It is a busy time of year at Sandown Stud with mares foaling down and mares needing to be covered, but it is also good to keep our patrons up to speed as to what is going on at Sandown Stud!

We have had a fairy tale season so far with 9 wins, 15 places with stakes winner Priceless Jewel winning the Gr3 Champagne Stakes in fine style. We are very proud of our AEPR which is R23 083 and our winner to runners percentage is 33%

Last Season we managed to sneak into the top 20 breeders in South Africa with a higher stake winner percentage than Summerhill,Klawervlei and Highlands. We had a 46% runners to winners strike rate which is very exciting for a small stud farm.

Our resident stallion Ashaawes continues to impress. Ashaawes’s success has not been limited to local tracks however. His first overseas campaigner Sanshaawes had a very successful Dubai carnival winning 2 races, running 2nd in the Gr1 Maktoum Challenge. Earning over R20 000 000 in prize money. He will be back at the carnival next year to take on the big guns.

On the home front the brilliant Priceless Jewel had a tremendous season with a Gr 2 win and Gr 1 3rd in the Majorca stakes. After a short rest she came back flying to win a Listed 1200 m feature with ease and then went onto to win the Champagne Stakes Gr3. Priceless Jewel will now be prepped for the Cape summer season. Promising 4 year old filly Resolution has won 4 out of her 13 starts and she too will hopefully pick up some black type soon.

Ashaawes’s exciting 3 year old crop have done extremely well with Peace Again, Riverine Forest, Tonto all winning first time out. Asstar nearly kept his unbeaten record of 2 out 2 when going down narrowly to Door of Deception in the Listed Sophomore Sprint.

We are looking forward a very exciting season with some lovely mares in foal to Ashaawes foaling down  in the next few months. Ashaawes will have a busy covering season as he a good book of mares including the champion race filly Beach Beauty’s dam!

Things are looking very promising for this imposing son of Kingmambo.
